Red Cap
Red Cap is a program that aims to teach kids safe and positive methods of dealing with anger. It runs once a week, throughout the lunch period. During this time students are provided with lunch (which takes into consideration religious, cultural and/or allergic restrictions), and then presented with the day’s lesson and activities within a structured learning environment. Each session typically includes an overview of the rules, a lesson, group work, role play, and either a creative aspect or a game. Red Cap not only provides the students with a lesson and activities, it also provides a safe place to share their feelings and experiences and to discuss the best options for dealing with their anger.

Goals of the Program

Anger is a normal part of life; therefore it is something that children need to learn to deal with properly. There is nothing wrong with feeling angry; problems only begin to arise when people do not deal with their anger appropriately. Poor coping skills can lead to hurtful conduct such as vandalism, self harming and violence. Teaching students how to manage their anger can significantly reduce the amount of violence within a school. Anger management, coping skills and positive decision making abilities are extremely beneficial concepts for children to grasp, which will only aide them with healthy growth and maturation.
