Majors Geoff and Sandra Ryan have been Salvation Army officers since 1990. Following one year’s service in the remote First Nations village of Gitwinksihlkw in Northern British Columbia, the Ryan’s were assigned as members of the six-person team appointed to reopen the work of The Salvation Army in the Soviet Union (following a 70 year absence). Three years of service in St. Petersburg was followed by six years in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, where the Ryan’s oversaw Salvation Army operations for the south of Russia (nine cities) including relief efforts in the war-torn Republic of Chechnya. Following their return to Canada from Russia in the summer of 2000, the Ryan’s have been heading Corps 614 in the inner-city neighbourhood of Regent Park in Toronto’s downtown eastside.
The Ryans have three children - Sergei, 18; Sasha, 10, Anya, 8. Geoff is a 4th generation Salvationist and Sandra, 5th generation. Prior the entering full-time service in The Salvation army, Sandra worked as a juvenile probation officer with the Ontario Government. Her educational background is in social work and counselling and her passion in ministry is prayer, counselling, preaching and healing. Geoff's training and background is in journalism and graphic design. He is the event leader for SAROOTS in Canada, the co-founder and editor of theRubicon.org, has published two books and is involved in politics. The Ryans speak internationally at both Army and non-Army events and conferences.

Regent Park is the largest housing project in Canada and one of the country’s toughest neighbourhoods. Situated in Toronto’s inner-city core, at the heart of the most densely populated sector in the country, “The Park” is home to over 15,000 people with over 100 nationalities represented. Regent Park is a complex mix of languages, cultures, displacement and generational poverty. Drugs, prostitution and violence often plague the community. But there are signs of hope. Transformation is needed, but it is a slow process.
Although The Salvation Army had been in Regent Park since 1904, its church (corps) presence was closed in 1988. In 2000, Majors Geoff & Sandra Ryan came back to Canada from having served with The Salvation Army in Russia for 9 years. After months of prayer walking around the neighbourhood, 614 Regent Park opened as a corps, and as the first 614, in February 2001. Since then, we have met each Sunday afternoon for community worship and celebration in a local community centre. Since 2001, over 30 people have moved into the neighbourhood to share life with the community.
Although you will find many ministries/programs in 614, the corps remains committed first and foremost to prayer, worship and celebration, and fostering meaningful relationships between people. We are a diverse group of people, united by love for God and commitment to our 614 community.
