Silence can be Deafening

Day of Silence - look it up on Wikipedia.com - it began in 1997 and from what I can read it is a student organized, non-violent, non-confrontational day that protests through silence the bullying and harassment that the gay and lesbian community faces. The 2007 date has already passed. But for 2008 wouldn't it be good for Christians to stand alongside gay students and their allies to support their efforts and bring awareness to this prejudice and hatred?
At the same time we would, by our actions, be combatting something that the Christian faith comes under regular critiscism for - that being how we treat homosexuals. The Church is quick to point fingers at the sin of homosexuality, which I believe is not God's design for relationships...but neither is multiple marriages, fractured families etc. etc. (all of which are commonly present in our local faith communities and don't come under harsh judgement and public ridicule and pointed out as an abomination in the way homosexuality does).
Let me be clear, I believe homosexuality is sin, but our battle is not against flesh and blood...and what better way to come against the powers of division and prejudice, judgement and hate than standing in unity and love with my neighbour.
Or...you could join (or not) the counter movement 'Day of Truth' founded in 2005 - look it up with the same source as above.
The Day of Silence is an American movement, however, if given the opportunity to participate in either protest I would ask myself if by doing so are my actions good or evil...I have to say that I would participate in the Day of Silence.
Will you? I'll take your silence as a yes.

Wow - I was going to be silent and not leave a comment, but I just wanted to say wow! you really have some great insights and thoughts on this. One thing that I have learned in my Christian walk is to love everyone as Christ loves me. Even if you are an addict, homosexual etc. And thats one thing that I also learned from both you and Rick when you lived here in Williams Lake, you have such a strong view point on things which is so biblical and its encouraging to read and hear, and challenge us to how we can be light in the darkness, not look at people and judge them for the sin in their lives, but to love them as Christ loves us. I am encouraged by this day of silence... not just that but also the day of truth.

Deana - thanks for sharing this with all of us who read this blog... its great stuff! Bless you as you continue to write and share from your heart.

Michelle :)
